Vintage Hardy Bros Sheffield Plate sauce boat, on tri footed legs. This is a beautiful sauce boat or gravy jug, with the ornate decorative scrollwork along the edges.
Sheffield plate is the name given to the process of putting a layer of sterling silver over a copper base, invented in Sheffield UK by Thomas Boulsover in 1742. Thus ensuring an item that looked like solid silver, was more affordable to the public.
This style of gravy boat became popular in the early 18th century and may be used for serving sauces, salad dressings, chutneys or dips or even drizzling chocolate over ice cream.
This is a lovely vintage piece, which would make a special wedding or house warming gift, or as a perfect accompaniment for the festive ham.
